Access Supervisor & Manager Information
The COBB eLearning Academy is sponsored by the Human Resources Training & Staff
Development department. This training resource will support Cobb County in
fulfilling employee development plans, contribute to management development
programs and improve overall employee effectiveness and productivity. The
program has been funded and there will not be a charge back associated with this
initiative.
The purpose of this page is to brief supervisors/managers on the program: what
it is, how it works, benefits to management & employees and systems to control
and monitor use.
Program Facts
Access to eLearning is a tremendous opportunity for all Cobb County employees.
Your employees now have "just in time" training in support of skill development
relative to specific job and organization requirements. At the same time it's
imperative to recognize the importance of monitoring the use of eLearning
materials on the job.
Below are program facts to help supervisors and managers understand the eLearning
program and how it can help employees build skills and improve on the job
performance:
Manager approval is NOT required for employees to take eLearning courses, but controls have been put in place to control usage (see subsequent bullets)
Each employee will acknowledge a Cobb County eLearning usage
policy prior to signing taking courses - view this policy by clicking
here.
eLearning courses are "self study", employees may access courses from their workstation, designated office PC's, or from home at any time that is convenient 24x7.
eLearning course sessions (training time) are typically 30-90 minutes and courses are usually completed in multiple sessions (total course time varies by course). Sessions do not require 1/2 or full day commitments out of the office.
Comprehensive user statistics are maintained by the eLearning system recording which courses each employee takes, date and time of course (first and last log-in), and assessment scores. This information is available to you by contacting the program administrator (see below).
Manager/Supervisor Application of eLearning
Department managers, unit supervisors and those responsible for organization
training and development take advantage of eLearning in the following ways:
Reduce or eliminate the costs associated with travel and time off the job
Deliver compulsory training and confirm course attendance/completion
Prescribe training linked to programs and or project skill gaps
Offer training on-demand to employees who don't have the time to attend class
Supply general training opportunity for career development
Easily and inexpensively cross train employees
Comprehensive user reports provide management detailed information on who
attended which course(s) and when (first/last log-in), completion status and
assessment scores. Contact your program administrator for details.
Supporting Team Members
Management is encouraged to determine how eLearning courses can benefit his/her
team - set usage expectations and institute policies and procedures to support
the process. The single biggest challenge to employees is his/her supervisor's
support in making time during the work day to train...
eLearning programs can be highly effective tools if the program administrators
and management execute some simple measures:
Require users to attend HR sponsored eLearning overview sessions
Set course completion and or usage expectations. Discuss course completion
objectives one on one with employees. Ask which courses they intend to complete
and by when. Remember to follow-up on completion dates...
Allow users "time on the job" to work on eLearning courses (note: valuable eLearning sessions can be completed in 30-90 minutes and do not require employees to be "out of the office"
Discuss eLearning intermittently at manager/staff meetings (simple reminders that these tools are available for reference goes a long way)
As an administrator or manager complete a few lessons from a course yourself and send an email to your employees regarding your experience
Set-up a "training PC" where uses can go to train free from workstation distractions
While eLearning is cost effective it's most important that you put resources
into creating an environment conducive to making use of these materials - it
won't happen by itself.
