What We Have Learned About eLearning

eLearning has been around for over 6 years now - let’s face it, its no longer new.  We now know what works and what doesn’t; what leads to success vs. failure.  We've been listening to our customers and have learned what organizations want in an online learning program.

Organizations can no longer afford to make a large upfront investments for traditional eLearning programs, especially after the realization that forecasted usage typically is not achieved.  Yet eLearning still has many benefits: flexibility, time-efficiency, convenience, and cost effectiveness.  Traditional classroom training has been effective for many years – the foolproof aspects of the classroom training model are that employees sign up for training when they need it, the training is scheduled on their calendar, the supervisor is aware that the employee will be in training during a specific day and time, and the organization pays for the training that is delivered.

Since it's inception, eLearning has been approached quite differently.  Presented as a self-serve learning model, organizations are often misguided to believe that online learning will magically take care of itself.  The truth is that online training is typically not scheduled, and supervisors are often unaware that training is even occurring, or left out of the loop entirely.  Furthermore, because the training is pre-paid for, organizations struggle with having to deploy training within a specific time frame, without consideration of actual employee needs, in an effort to maximize their investment.

We've asked customers what an ideal learning solution would be.  It is clear that the self-serve learning model is somewhat ineffective. They want employees to have dedicated, scheduled training time so it is taken seriously and actually achieved. They also want supervisors involved in training decisions and aware of training schedules.  They typically can no longer afford the cost, travel expense, and reduced manpower associated with offsite training events.  And finally, organizations want the convenience and cost-benefits of online learning, but without long-term contracts and large upfront investments.
